Self-sufficiency

At Bere Mill, we are proud to be taking significant steps towards self-sufficiency.  In early 2025 we took our biggest step yet when we installed solar panels, which now provide a substantial part of our electricity needs. Meanwhile, all the water used by the farm, garden and house comes from our own borehole, ensuring a reliable and independent supply. Looking ahead, we plan to install a water turbine within the next few years, harnessing the power of the river to generate additional electricity and help cover the shortfall from the solar panels during the winter months.

Sustainability extends to our food consumption as well. We grow our own fruit and vegetables and raise livestock on the farm, providing meat for our own use. By combining renewable energy, independent water supply, and home-grown produce, Bere Mill is striving to operate as a self-sufficient, environmentally responsible estate that makes the most of the resources available to us.
