The Land

Bere Mill sits in the river valley: above it on the other side of the B3400 is the Bere Mill Stud on chalk upland. This is a very special landscape, which is managed sensitively and with care to protect the natural environment of chalk stream and water meadows. And the enveloping chalk upland.

Upland & Lowland

Hampshire’s chalk uplands are cut through by clear fast-flowing rivers and streams

Grazing & Haymaking

Traditional water meadows survive at Bere Mill and provide the majority of grazing and hay

The mountain sheep are sweeter,
But the valley sheep are fatter;
We therefore deemed it meeter
To carry off the latter.
